Abstract
An OH maser has been discovered in the direction of the H II region N159 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The maser emits on the 1665-MHz transition, with two narrow velocity features (< 0.5 km s–1) separated by ∼ 4 km s−1 each having a peak intensity ∼ 0.1 Jy but displaying opposite senses of circular polarization. These properties indicate that it is similar to the hundred or so galactic Type I masers found near H II regions (believed to be sites of star formation); it is the first such maser found outside our Galaxy. Keywords
