Abstract
The function of paretic muscle can improve greatly in time, probably mainly by spontaneous re-innervation of the denervated muscle fibers by an increased branching of the terminal arborization of the intact motor nerve fibers. This re-innervation is enhanced by the close proximity of degenerating muscle or of an ether extract of degenerating muscle. It is suggested that products of the degenerating muscle stimulate the intact terminal arborization to increased branching.
