Abstract
Photon emission stimulated by scanning tunneling microscopy has been detected in air with gold-gold junctions. This emission which can be controlled by applying a high electric field between the surface and tip, ceases or is stimulated on the scanned area, depending on the direction and magnitude of the field. The aim of this paper is to propose an explanation for this process involving the response of the molecules physisorbed on the gold surface, to a high electric field. Keywords
