Neutron scattering cross sections for methyl groups and tetrahedral molecules

Abstract
Neutron scattering intensities for librational excitations of molecules provide valuable information for separating librations from translational lattice modes. We have calculated the intensities for transitions from levels within the ground state multiplet to excited states for XH3 molecules rotating around their symmetry axis and for XH4 molecules performing three dimensional rotations. These intensities depend characteristically on the momentum transfer which should allow one to distinguish them from translational modes and from each other. These results may be used to verify assignments of lines which in the past have been based on less reliable criteria.
