Abstract
Chloral hydrate in low concentrations decreases the amount of volatile fatty-acids formed from hay by rumen microorganisms, while it raised the propionic acid content. The composition of the microflora was changed markedly under the influence of chloral hydrate. Chloral hydrate may selectively influence the rumen microorganisms by being more toxic to gram-positive bacteria. Keywords
