Abstract
The inverse problem in radiation therapy determines beam intensities from known dose distributions. A similarity between image reconstruction and the inverse problem in radation therapy exists though both problems are not completely equivalent. The explicit connection between image reconstruction and radiation therapy is examined for the case of rotational therapy with photon beams. Reconstruction formulae for radiation therapy dose calculations are derived for the case where attenuation and scatter are negligible. This simple model is presented to illustrate some subtleties of reconstruction algorithms in radiation therapy optimization and indicate their impact on applications of those algorithms in radiotherapy treatment planning. Keywords
