Abstract
During 1973 and 1974 a density estimate of larger mammals was conducted in Arli National Park, south-eastern Upper Volta. Three methods were used : the road strip census using mean visibility distances, the walking strip census using the geometric mean of sighting distances, and the territorial mapping method. Fifteen species were censused [Tragelaphus scriptus, Hippotragus equinus, Adenota kob kob, kobus defassa, Redunca redunca, Alcelaphus buselaphus major, Damaliscus korrigum, Sylvicapra grimmia, Ourebia ourebia, Syncerus caffer, Hippopotamus amphibius, Phacochoerus aethiopicus, Papio anubis, Canis adustus and Panthera leo]. Densities and total populations for the 1000 km2 of the study area are given. The combined biomass of the 12 large herbivores censused was 2202 kg/km2. The African elephant, Loxodonta africana (Blumenbach), found in the Park from Aug. (mid-rainy season) until Dec. (early dry season), was not included in the density estimate. Keywords
