Thyrotoxicosis Associated with Thrombocytopenia and Hypersplenism: Report of a Case

Abstract
This paper deals with the description of a 34-year-old white man who had thyrotoxicosis of relatively long duration, associated with thrombocytopenia that was possibly secondary to hypersplenism. The thrombocytopenic condition was not corrected when euthyroidal status was attained by means of therapy with radioactive iodine. After a splenectomy was performed, the platelet counts, clot retraction, and tourniquet tests were within normal limits. In addition, the patient''s leukopenia, which had been persistent, was also improved. Further studies are needed in regard to the behavior of platelets in persons with thyrotoxicosis, prior to and after treatment.
