COMPARISON OF GROWTH AND AUTOLYSIS OF 2 STRAINS OF TUBERCLE BACILLI

Abstract
Tubercle bacilli grow in a N- deficient medium when adequate glucose is present. Second generation cells grown in this medium contain approx. 40% of the N of cells in the inoculum. In the absence of both C and N sources in the medium, only a slight reduction in N per mg. dry wt. occurred. Under these conditions there is no lysis. Cells produced in glucose and without N resume growth following the addition of N only after a lag period. A loss of enzymes involved in the assimilation of N from the medium and substitution of enzymes capable of acting upon cellular nitrogenous substances may explain the results,.
