Abstract
Since the early 1980s, domestic marijuana cultivation has provided an increasing proportion of the marijuana consumed in the United States. Some estimate that as much as 50 percent of the marijuana consumed in the U.S. is now domestically grown. Despite the impact of domestic cultivation on the marijuana market, little is known about people who grow marijuana for profit. Compared with many other business opportunities in the drug world, marijuana cultivation is land‐bound and labor intensive. This paper presents the preliminary findings of an interview study of domestic marijuana growers, with a focus on those growers with strong conventional bonds to their local communities.
