Abstract
Erythropoietin is a polypeptide hormone that is apparently the primary regulator of erythropoiesis. This article reviews some of the current concepts regarding the site of erythropoietin (Ep) production, the mechanism by which it stimulates erythropoiesis, the assay systems available for measuring plasma and urinary Ep levels, and its role in the pathogenesis of anemias. Finally, some speculations on its future role in therapy for some anemias are included. Keywords
