An Alternative Form of a Forced-Choice F Scale

Abstract
A forced-choice form of the F scale was constructed and correlations were computed between the resulting scores and those from a “counterbalanced” form and its two components: the scores from embedded original Authoritarianism Scale items and the scores from embedded “reversed” items. Reliabilities of the forced-choice scale were .69 and .66 for two samples. It was observed that the forced-choice × “original” correlations were slightly lower than those reported by others end, more importantly, the forced-choice × “counterbalanced” scale correlations were of the order of .7, thus casting some doubt on the relative advantage of the forced-choice form over the “counterbalanced” form for selection of “high” authoritarians. In addition, evidence was presented indicating an advantage of a lateral form of FC scale over a vertical form.
