Serum Uric Acid Values in Various States of Thyroid Function

Abstract
Summary The serum uric acid level has been measured in 54 patients with myxedema, 84 with thyrotoxicosis and 79 euthyroid control subjects of whom 23 had simple goitre and 56 were healthy. In some patients stable protein-bound iodine was also measured. The results show that there is a significant correlation between thyroid status as measured by PB 127I concentrations and serum uric acid levels. However, although the mean serum uric acid level was slightly higher in the patients with myxedema than in the control group statistical significance was not achieved. The thyrotoxic patients had a lower mean serum uric acid than the controls, but again this finding was not statistically significant. The practical value of these results is to draw attention to the need to investigate the cause of hyperuricemia in a patient with myxedema rather than ascribe a raised serum uric acid level to the myxedema process.
