Abstract
Boating marinas are an increasingly common means of providing for recreational and certain types of commercial boat storage. Growth in numbers of this type of development is a response to increasing boat numbers and changing characteristics. As a means of satisfying boat storage requirements, marinas have advantages and disadvantages for boat owners and the community. Focusing on the NSW scene, this paper puts growth in marina numbers in the context of increasing consumer demand and alternative storage options. Environmental effects, which make marinas a controversial type of development, are then outlined, together with the roles played by state government in controlling and promoting this type of development. Keywords
