Poised for a 200-fold increase in capacity over initial models of six years ago, 5 1/4 inch hard disks are emerging as major elements for small-system designs. The author describes how these disk drives work and how they can provide increased capacity. Designs for higher data transfer rate are described, the crucial role of head positioning is discussed, and the development of disk drive arrays is examined.
