Abstract
An attempt was made to delineate the role of certain hormonal factors on the in vivo response of plasma non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) to fasting. Hypophysectomized, adrenalectomized, and thyroidectomized rats were fasted for 16-hour periods and NEFA levels were compared in the fed and fasted state. NEFA levels rose significantly in all preparations on fasting. The level of NEFA in fed animals was significantly lower in the hormonally deficient group. It would appear that pituitary hormones are not essential for the response of NEFA to fasting. Keywords
