Abstract
The effect of three-body forces on the dielectric behavior of ionic crystals has been critically examined. It has been shown that the three-body forces modify the Lorentz force on the ions, which in turn modifies the Lorentz-Lorenz and Clausius-Mossotti relations connecting the molecular polarizabilities with the corresponding dielectric constants. These modified relations have been used to calculate the molecular polarizabilities and from them the low- and high-frequency polarizabilities of ions using the additivity rule for all the alkali halides and alkaline earth oxide crystals. The study on alkaline earth oxides suggests that the oxygen-ion polarizabilities are constant in various solids as are those of other ions. This result is at variance with earlier belief according to which the electronic polarizability of oxygen ion varies widely from solid to solid. Keywords
