Abstract
Normal tissues derived energy by respiration (oxidation) only, tumors by respiration and by lactic fermentation of glucose. In vitro, tumor cells survived absence of O or glucose many hrs., but died quickly in deficiency of both. They used several times more glucose than normal tissues, mostly by fermentation. They consumed nearly all the O in their blood supply. Relatively their supply of glucose was moderate, of O very poor. Reducing blood glucose by insulin checked growth but did not kill tumor cells. Reducing blood O by low concentration in inspired air quickly killed most cells of a tumor. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
