Abstract
A N-free soln., containing mannitol or glucose, inorganic salts and chalk, was inoculated with activated sewage sludge and aerated with a rapid current of air at 25[degree]C. Active fixation of N occurred through the growth of N-fixing bacteria. The bact. sludge, which separated completely under suitable conditions, was transferred to a fresh batch of medium for the next aeration, thus making the process continuous. The method may be used to accumulate bacterial protein formed by fixation of atmospheric N.
