A STUDY OF GASTRIC PEPSIN IN VARIOUS DISEASES

Abstract
Gastric pepsin was studied in a series of 81 patients, the specimens being taken 1 hr. after an Ewald meal. The determinations were done by the method of Anson and Mirsky. The patients studied included a group of miscellaneous cases, duodenal ulcer, carcinoma of the stomach, postoperative ulcer cases, and pernicious anemia. The pepsin values were high in patients with duodenal ulcer and low or absent in carcinoma, of the stomach and pernicious anemia. The coefficient or correlation between pepsin and free acidity was high. The pepsin content of fasting gastric juice varied over a wide range.
