Abstract
As society becomes more complex and the population grows, pollutants, coming from a variety of industrial and agricultural activities, are contaminating our water and air to an unacceptable level. It has now been recognized in some countries that the most effective way to deal with these problems is to remove and destroy these pollutants at the source, before they are discharged into the environment. Unfortunately, we have a legacy of decades of neglect; already many streams, rivers, lakes, and groundwaters, as well as urban air, are polluted to the point that they must be cleaned up. This problem will be with us for many decades. Keywords
