THE EFFECT OF THYROXIN ON THE TISSUE METABOLISM OF EXCISED LIMULUS HEART

Abstract
The Limulus heart survives well after excision and its beating depends on the presence of the ganglion in its median nerve. Portions of Limulus heart with and without its ganglion were kept in contact with thyroxin for various periods. After 15 hrs. of such contact there was an increase in the metabolism of the heart whether with or without its ganglion[long dash]i.e., whether working or not working. Thyroxin under suitable conditions could apparently increase the metabolism of excised Limulus heart, and this increase was evidently not due to work and was probably not mediated through the nerves but directly on the cells of the heart muscle.
