Abstract
This study is concerned with devising a simple method for rapid determination of the area of the ovate vegetable leaves such as bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) and amaranth (Amaranthus caudatus) using linear measurements. A linear relationship was found between the log of leaf area (A) and the log of the product: leaf length (L) x leaf maximum width (W). Using regression analysis, correlation coefficients of 0.9986 and 0.9984 were obtained for bitter leaf and amaranth respectively. It is suggested that a preprepared gridded model straight line graph of log (A) against log (L x W) drawn from data of area and linear measurements on leaf samples randomly selected from a particular cultivar can be used in the field for the rapid estimation of the area of leaves from that cultivar. Keywords
