Oxytocin, "Salting Out," and Water Intoxication

Abstract
Two patients developed water intoxication following transabdominal intraamniotic injection of hypertonic saline solution ("salting out") and oxytocin infusion. Oxytocin infusion alone has been reported to produce this complication. Salting out produces an expanded extracellular volume, which, combined with the antidiuretic effect of oxytocin drip, provides a greater danger of producing water intoxication. Patients receiving this combined treatment must have restricted fluid intake at the beginning of oxytocin infusion.
