Abstract
Trade unions in Poland are split into three main groupings. The first, Solidarity was initially close to the government whilst the second, the OPZZ, was widely regarded as a collaborator with the old power structure. ‘Independent’ unions boast of having no political affiliations. All unions have been influenced by shifting employee attitudes as support for government economic policies has declined. Disputes initiated by Solidarity have been directed towards continuing economic transformation. Spontaneous protest actions have reduced the credibility of trade unions. Uncompromising attitudes on any side are inappropriate and could carry serious political dangers.
