Neuromuscular Blockade Associated With Gentamicin Therapy

Abstract
Respiratory failure occurred in a patient receiving gentamicin sulfate therapy. Neuromuscular blockade was demonstrated by ulnar nerve stimulation. Partial reversal of hypoventilation was obtained following intravenous administration of calcium. Renal impairment may have caused accumulation of high serum levels of drug, and lowered serum levels of calcium may have facilitated the neuromuscular blocking action of gentamicin.
