Abstract
Review of investigations using longitudinal probing and radiographic assessments indicate that the prevalence, magnitude, rate, and temporal patterns of periodontal destruction as well as the ability of clinical and laboratory tests to detect and predict loss of clinical attachment need further investigation. These unresolved issues are discussed and their impact on the practice of periodontics is examined. Keywords
