Abstract
The paper considers the extent of poverty and argues that psychoanalysis has something important to say about the impact of poverty on personal developmental needs and the image of self. It can also contribute to an understanding of the ways in which gross inequalities are managed psychologically and socially by reference to mechanisms of splitting and projection. No solutions can be found to the problem of poverty until there is agreement as to the nature of a fair society. The paper ends with some psychological reflections on the nature of wealth
