Abstract
Cytochrome a prepared with cholate, fraction S3, (K. Okunuki, I. Sekuzu, T. Yonetani, and S. Takemori, J. Biochem. (Tokyo) 45,847 (1958)) was inhibited by cationic and anionic detergents, except Quatamin 86. Polyalcoholic-type detergents had no appreciable influence. Non-ionic detergents restored the activity of cytochrome a which had been partially inactivated during isolation by use of cholate. Emasol 4130 (non-ionic type) reversed the cholate inhibition, whereby the maximum activation was attained at 0.1-5% concentration at pH 7.4 in presence of 0.06% cholate and resulted in higher yield and specific activity. Cytochrome a prepared by supplementary addition of Emasol 4130 showed identical physicochemical and enzymic properties with the S3 fraction. Keywords
