MCHF evaluation of the specific mass shift

Abstract

Different expressions for the specific mass shift are derived. For exact wavefunctions these expressions are equivalent but results may differ when approximate wavefunctions are used. The comparative accuracy of two of the expressions is investigated with multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock wavefunctions for the ground state of He, Li⁺, Be²⁺ and Ne⁸⁺.
