Abstract
IN a recent article in the Journal, Sulkin and Pike1 reviewed the subject of viral infections contracted in the laboratory. They summarized 222 laboratory infections due to viruses; 21 of them were fatal. The probable sources of these infections in at least a third of the patients was the handling of animal tissues; 30 patients were presumed to have been exposed to a contaminated atmosphere, 13 had handled infectious material from patients, and 19 had worked with material from infected chick embryos. Known accidents were responsible for only 27 of the cases; the most common situation involved the splashing . . .Keywords
