Abstract
Within the framework of macroscopic continuum theory, we formulate the calculation of the electrostatic potential for a charge in the presence of an anisotropic diffuse interface. We present a systematic method for determining the analytical forms of dielectric profiles for which the Fourier–Bessel components of the electrostatic potential can be obtained analytically. We discuss in detail a smooth exponential profile which manifests long‐range diffuseness. On the basis of exact and approximate calculations, the image potential for this model is obtained in the main region of interest for applications. Keywords
