THE CLINICAL EPIDEMIOLOGY OF POLIOMYELITIS

Abstract
Emphasis is placed on the fact that poliomyelitis has come to take its place among the most contagious of infections simulating in this respect, measles. In a family setting in the United States today once the virus is introduced (often by the juvenile members) it spreads with speed and thoroughness. Often the parents, who may not have had the benefit of previous exposure to the infecting strain of virus, become infected. This situation is a good example of understanding a single patient''s illness in relation to his family and his home environment.
