Effect of Diet on Plasma Insulin and Glucose Levels of Newly Hatched Chicks

Abstract
The effect of feeding mash, high-fat diet or fasting of day old chicks on plasma glucose and insulin concentrations was determined. Both plasma glucose and insulin increased on mash feeding with a significant correlation. Although high-fat diet feeding and fasting increased plasma glucose level, plasma insulin did not change in high-fat diet fed and decreased in fasted chicks. These changes are consistent with the well known surge in lipogenesis that occurs during the first week after hatching on mash feeding. 1 This work was supported in part by NIH grants AM 05410-10 and 5 T 01 GM 00293.
