Abstract
Summary Children may reason about time on the basis of duration and succession only, and without reference to velocity or space. In order to study this type of reasoning children of 5 to 8 years of age were presented with 12 situations where limited information was given about two dolls cooking pancakes. Results show thai young children relate duration (how long things are cooking), starting order and finishing order in specifie ways, depending on the meaning, for the child, of the concepts related. At the age of seven, important changes in the meanings and reasoning appear, although they cannot yet be characterized as operalional.
