Abstract
A new multirate method is presented for very-low-bit-rate image coding. Some preliminary coding results are shown and compared with conventional subband coding using adaptive differential pulse-code modulation (ADPCM). Based on experiments performed on a test pattern, the new approach performs significantly better than conventional systems. By using edge modeling and deconvolution concepts, the new method avoids edge blurring and ringing (oscillatory distortion) near object boundaries. Other subband coding schemes suffer from both problems at low bit rates. Keywords
