Abstract
A semistructured interview was used in 74 cases of Parkinson's disease to assess the impact of the disease on the hobbies and transport of the patients, who were grouped according to degree of disability. Sedentary and passive activities within the house (for example, watching television) were well preserved as disability advanced, but this was not the case with all other activities, such as those involving manual dexterity, and those involving leaving the house. Decreasing mobility also affected the number and length of journeys on foot and those using all forms of transport. The findings are discussed in relation to the acquisition of hobbies and interests in early and middle life and their maintenance later.
