Abstract
A new approach is presented for long term forecasting of vehicle ownership and the household total car fleet, based on a proven demographic method, longitudinal analysis. This method, by following life cycle patterns of successive cohorts (groups of households whose heads are born during the same period), enables one to identify long term dynamics while providing an in‐depth understanding of individual behaviour. Keywords
