Abstract
A 3-year prospective study to elucidate the cause of fifth day fits was carried out. A highly significant relationship with low cerebrospinal fluid zinc levels was found. Theoretical and practical considerations support the contention that fifth day fits are caused by an acute deficiency of zinc. Keywords
