Abstract

Absolute soft x-ray measurements on laser heated gold cavities (0.25-1 mm diam.) yield brightness temperatures > 10⁶ K. Comparison with theoretical work shows that the temperature in the cavity is determined by the diffusive loss of radiation into the wall.
