Abstract
Doctors are often unwitting parties to the deception and denial practiced by alcoholics, missing chances to bring up drinking problems when patients are more likely to be honest with themselves, hesitating to confront patients with the diagnosis when this should be done, and contributing to rejection by using euphemisms. A probing but accepting attitude is the best tool to erode denial. Keywords
