Variations of Serum Diphenylhydantoin Concentrations in Epileptic Out-Patients

Abstract
Serum diphenylhydantoin (DPH) concentrations showed considerable individual variations in material of 106 epileptic out-patients. Variations were remarkable, although daily DPH doses were calculated per kg of body weight. Simultaneous phenobarbitone treatment did not significantly lower the DPH levels probably due to rather small barbiturate dosage, although a tendency to do that was seen. Binding of DPH to serum proteins may decrease its toxicity. The only way to reduce the side-effects to a minimum seems to be individual dosage based on repeated measurements of serum DPH concentrations.
