Research on Middle Age: An Assessment

Abstract
Many gerontologists believe that an understanding of middle age is essential for a comprehensive life-span perspective on aging. The relatively limited research on middle age was reviewed and assessed as having several problematic characteristics which should be considered in designing, evaluating, and applying future research on middle age. Recommendations for future research include: focusing on middle age as the central research concern; utilizing statewide, nationwide, and international samples; clarifying the definition of middle age; and focusing on neglected groups of middle-aged individuals.
