OPTIMAL NaCl CONCENTRATION FOR ORAL SALINE DIURESIS

Abstract
The diuretic effect of oral hypotonic saline solns. was studied in the bladder-fistula dog. Using 0.0 to 0.9% NaCl it was found that 0.5% produces the greatest diuresis while 0.2% NaCl produced the least change in the NaCl balance as shown by lack of cumulative action and minimal change in the serum chlorides. Human subjects cannot tolerate water containing more than 2 gs./liter of NaCl when large doses are given.
