Abstract
The rise of the concept of the oneparent family out of the notion of 'the incomplete family'. In the past the Netherlands have known to prevailing familytypes: extended family and nuclear family closely tied in kinship and community.; In this century we have seen two general patterns of development which lead to the same familytype: the individulized nuclear family. Motherhood and fatherhood are seen as two complementary parts of parenthood. A family with only one parent is considered incomplete, which one has to be restored to the normal stage. Through ideological, demographic, economic and technological changes the number of one-parent families is increasing. It has become apparent that the one-parent family is no longer exceptional and can no longer be only considered as a temporary or marginal phenomenon.; The one-parent family is gaining status and, is no longer obscure and only subject of chaity. As for family sociology it seens necessary to reconsider its 'ideology' and the theoretical approaches based in the study of individuals in primary living groups.
