Abstract
Young and sexually mature rats fed diets containing between 1 mg. and 5 mg, of Mg per 100 g. of diet developed neuropathological changes characterized by a degeneration of the cells of Purkinje of the cerebellum. Cytological examination revealed cells in varying degrees of chromatolysis with an increase in cell vol. and a decrease in the staining property of the Nissl substance. In the 2d stage there was a peripheral migration of the nucleus and an increase in vacuolation and the cell vol. Cerebellar sections of rabbits restricted to diets low in Mg showed alteration of the cells of Purkinje. The changes were characterized by the presence of a large number of fusiform, dense and basophilic staining cells of Purkinje without a staining nucleus. Renal damage occurred in rabbits in a low Mg diet. The lesions involved both the renal corpuscle and tubules. The changes involved degeneration of the tubular epithelium and fibrosis of the corticomedullary region. Keywords
