Abstract
That the estrogenic principles occurring in plants (tokokinines) are chemically identical with the a-follicle hormone from the urines of pregnant women or of mares, is proven by the isolation of the hormone from palm nut oil. From 50 kgm. of palm kernel residues 2.4 kgm. of a crude oil was obtained, containing some 100 mgm. of hormone; 18 mgm. were isolated. The two substances (from urine and from palm nut oil) are identical in their melting points, (256[degree]C), optical rotation, absorption in the ultra violet, formula (C18H22O2), the melting point of the benzoate and semicarbazone, and their physiological action (5 million units per gm. in the Allen-Doisy test). The process of isolation is analogous to the one used with urine.
