Abstract
This paper reviews the technological feasibility of food irradiation applications and its possible role in reducing postharvest losses and producing safe foods. It describes the international agreement on the wholesomeness of irradiated food, the progress in national regulation, and impediments to commercialization of the food irradiation process. Emphasis is given to international cooperation to improve the acceptability of irradiated foods in trade, by the food industry, and by consumers.
