Abstract
It has been suggested that diabetic glomerulosclerosis is uncommon in patients with renal papillary necrosis, and that the finding of diabetic glomerulosclerosis in a renal biopsy might be useful in excluding papillary necrosis as a cause of acute renal failure in a diabetic. Forty-six cases of renal papillary necrosis diagnosed at autopsy were reviewed. Seventeen of these cases were known to be diabetic. Thirteen of the 17 had concomitant diabetic glomerulosclerosis, a total incidence of 76%. A selective review of the literature showed an overall incidence of diabetic glomerulosclerosis in diabetics with renal papillary necrosis of 41%. The presence or absence of diabetic glomerulosclerosis cannot serve as a differential point in ruling out the presence of papillary necrosis in a diabetic with acute renal failure. Keywords
