Abstract
This article explores the dilemma surrounding the general utility of realignment theory in analyzing the connection between elections and policy shifts; the theory seems to work well in the American context but is less useful in explaining British politics. We reverse the normal analysis, focusing on periods associated with major policy shifts and attempting to discover cross-national similarities in the elections associated with those policy shifts. Keywords
